Sister Maria
Innocentia Hummel was born in Bavaria in 1909. During
her early schooling at a Catholic school, her
unmistakable artistic gift was encouraged by one of
her teachers.
She had decided to
become a Franciscan Sister. The example of the sisters
who were her early artistic mentors and the influence
of the art she studied, was a deciding factor in her
decision to enter into the Franciscan Convent of
Siessen. While at the convent, she taught art at a
school for girls. It was in the seclusion of the
Convent of Siessen that she accomplished the work that
would make her name known throughout the world.
She lived a
contemplative life within her religious order,
including teaching, working with children and
painting.
