Pierrot and Pierrette -
The Art Deco Art of Love
In the 17th
century, French painter, Jean-Antoine Walteau, painted two
clowns who
were made famous in Italian theatre productions, and then
adapted to French Pantomime
Pierrot is the
harlequin character quite often depicted in art deco vintage
imagery,
particularly art cards. He is kind and gentle, and adores
Pierrette, and the couple is often
depicted as lovers. Many art deco artworks on ephemera portray
Pierrot as pining for an
either disinterested, or very interested Pierrette, or
serenading her with his trusty mandolin
