Pierrot and Pierrette - The Art Deco Art of Love

In the 17th century, French painter, Jean-Antoine Walteau, painted two clowns who 
were made famous in Italian theatre productions, and then adapted to French Pantomime

Pierrot is the harlequin character quite often depicted in art deco vintage imagery, 
particularly art cards. He is kind and gentle, and adores Pierrette, and the couple is often 
depicted as lovers. Many art deco artworks on ephemera portray Pierrot as pining for an 
either disinterested, or very interested Pierrette, or serenading her with his trusty mandolin
